A few months ago my little cousin, Cailyn, was diagnosed with DIPG. The tumor, Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma, (DIPG), infiltrates the brain stem, and is lethal and inoperable. Chemotherapy and radiation are also ineffective. Every week, two to five families in the United States lose a child under age 9 to this tumor. Most children die within one year of diagnosis. This debilitating, heart wrenching disease slowly robs children of their motor functions resulting in partial paralysis, loss of voice, sight, hearing and finally an inability to eat and breathe. The median overall survival of children diagnosed with DIPG is approximately 9 months. The 1 and 2 year survival rates are approximately 30% and less than 10%, respectively. These statistics make it one of the most devastating pediatric malignancies.
We just received word this week that Cailyn has taken a sudden turn for the worse and is in need of our thoughts and prayers. Overnight Cailyn has become unable to walk comfortably and has started having a very hard time talking and swallowing. Her doctor has ordered a swallow test, EKG, and arranged a meeting with occupational therapy where she will be evaluated for use of a wheel chair. Please, as we are coming upon Thanksgiving, and giving thanks for all we have, please remember to say a special prayer for Cailyn and her family. My heart breaks for anyone diagnosed with cancer, especially our children! It's just not right! Please pray that they find a cure for this horrible and deadly disease very soon!
